Booth 6017 Tailored Solutions will preview version 5.3 of its popular Label Traxx print business software for label printers and flexo converters. Version 5.3 permits users to convert any Label Traxx report to PDF format, and to email the report directly from Label Traxx. A new Digital Storefront also will be introduced, with features particularly attractive to printers using digital presses. In Label Traxx 5.3, individual customers each can be assigned different currencies.
For the past several years printing technology has been radically changing the printing industry, and while many printing companies are reluctant to invest in new, state-of-the-art equipment and software out of concern for their return on investment, Print Tech believes it is essential. Print Tech has always considered itself a leader in the quick printing area, and to grow within that arena the company understands that it must evolve within the industry. With that understanding, Print Tech is now offering its customers PrintFLEX(TM), a Web-to-print document customization technology. Print Tech has been working on this technology for the past two years and invested millions to bring its clients to the cutting edge of customized business and marketing communications. “Print Tech has developed PrintFLEX(TM), a technology that will set the benchmark for all print marketing customization, or as we like to say variable data printing on steroids,” says Russell Evans, CEO. “With traditional print, direct marketing returns of .5% to 2% are the norm. PrintFLEX(TM) customization, however, has proven results 10 times the norm and has seen response rates of over 20%. Its about helping our customers market and communicate more successfully to their current and potential clients.”
Online technology, an ancillary business opportunity for many magazines, has become a means of survival for others. In the past few months, at least three publications - the mass-market Omni and the lesser-known Shade and Adcom - have opted to check their troubled print versions at the door of the online universe in an attempt to reinvent themselves electronically and financially.Keith Ferrell, editor of the 14-year-old science title, says going further online is a logical step for a magazine thats about the future. We decided somebody was going to have to take the plunge, he says. And since were Omni, we thought wed do it.Of course, as with any major transition, the Omni move isnt quite as simple as a press release might make it sound. Increased postal rates and paper costs probably played a part in the General Media decision, too, along with a shrinking subscriber base and declining ad pages. (Although the New York City-based magazine posted a 15 percent increase in ad pages last year, to 672 from 586, according to figures compiled by Publishers information Bureau, that was still down from Omnis 1992 total of 724 ad pages.)

CATEGORY: OTHER Most malls and other stores have what they call a Family facility–one big bathroom with a toilet, changing table, and sink and a lock on the door. If they dont have that, there should be a handicap accessible bathroom. Once again, a single bathroom with toilet handrails and plenty of room for changing diapers and/or freshening up. I use a visual distraction on the way into the mens room and on the way to a stall to keep her occupied and eyes focused. Good luck.
Public toilets in the region are under the microscope as campaigners try to find how many are still left. The British Toilet Association are studying every North East council as part of a national survey. He added: This survey will enable us to find current levels of provision, particularly in respect of facilities for special needs users, such as babies and young children as well as the elderly and infirm.

Families are urged to be more vigilant about the state of electrics in their homes. Research, commissioned by the Electrical Safety Council, suggests there is widespread ignorance in the North East about how safe electrics are and how often they should be tested. Around 35% of people in the North East do not know or have never had their electrics checked and an additional 30% of houses in the region have wiring over 15-years-old. When it comes to paying for checks, around 15% of people would not be prepared to pay for an inspection by a registered electrician.
SAFETY MANAGEMENT A SERIOUS HAZARD. From 1982 to 1992, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) gathered data showing that approximately 411 workers were killed each year by electrocution. The statistics clearly show those employees at the highest risk. Ninety-nine percent of the fatalities were men, and 64% of these were under the age of 35. As we might expect, new hires were the most vulnerable, with 41% of those killed having been on the job for less than one year. Construction workers were electrocuted most frequently (40%), but manufacturing accounted for 12% and forestry and agriculture another 11% of the deaths. It was concluded that 55% of the workplace electrocutions were due to the failure to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE). Interestingly, 99% of the electrocutions were sustained while working on alternating current.
Many electrical accidents and fires happen in Utah County homes each year. Utah Power officials are encouraging residents to use common sense and take a little extra care when using electricity. Utah Power offers the following tips for electricity safety: Install outlet plug covers if you have small children.

When most people think of plastic surgeons, they imagine facelifts, liposuction, and tummy tucks–but ask a soldier injured in Iraq and he or she will tell a different story, relates the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Arlington Heights, Ill. Plastic surgeons work alongside other surgeons and physicians in combat support hospitals to address the immediate needs of the injured. Because of the severity of many war wounds, plastic surgery is not performed in the field. Instead, they treat the wound first to ensure it is free from infection and then fly the soldier home to receive additional medical and reconstructive measures. Homemade roadside bombs and high-velocity guns pose the biggest threats to soldiers in Iraq, notes Friedman. The most common injuries are wounds in the lower and upper extremities as well as the face. Although soldiers wear body armor with built-in plates, the arms, face, and legs remain exposed. Helmets protect the head but leave the face susceptible to injury.
Plastic surgeons will tomorrow issue the first official consumer safety guidelines amid growing concern that patients are being exploited by untrained and unscrupulous medics. The 10-point checklist issued by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) emphasises a patients right to cancel a procedure at any point - up to the time the anaesthestic takes effect. It will also advise that anyone considering a cosmetic procedure should ensure they are informed and accept the limitations and risks involved.

Despite an industry upheaval and two gravely ill sons, this health-care entrepreneur discovered the prescription for perseverance. Sadly, looming business woes were the least of the Langdons worries that year. In the summer of 1996, at age three, their son Spencer–twin brother of Tyler–was diagnosed with leukemia, warranting three years of chemotherapy and approximately $1,000 worth of medication each month. Faced with circumstances that would obliterate the future goals of most, the Langdons didnt fold, but instead expanded ATPs services to override the Medicare massacre. Making ATP a onestop shop by adding outpatient rehab to its services was the ultimate goal, but first the Langdons had to move the company out of their Carrboro, North Carolina, home (situated in a bedroom, no less) and into a Hillsborough, North Carolina, office complex. To Ted, outpatient was ATPs salvation. I really started seeing the effects [of the Balanced Budget Act] in 1997, says Ted, 33. Medicare-based agencies were laying off staff, and the first people to go were with contract companies. If they didnt go Out of business or merge with other corporations, agencies drastically reduced their pay rates to contract companies, lowering the therapists wages. Some just didnt pay at all–like House Calls, a statewide home-health agency in North Carolina whose owner was nabbed for allegedly double-billing his way to Medicare/Medicaid fraud in 1997. I tried everything I could to retrieve [the $14,000 House Calls owed], but they were sued by everyone, says Ted. They had everything frozen, and I wa s so far down on the lawsuit list that, basically, I never got paid.

Gene Veno: DCs Person of the Year Of course, unity is nothing new to Gene Veno. As executive director of the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association, he helped unify the chiropractic profession in the Keystone State; then he helped do the same for chiropractors in neighboring New Jersey. In June 2005, he began addressing the need for a unified purpose and message on a national level. According to Mr. Veno, the Campaign for Chiropractic is a three-phase project:
Proposed Legislation Would Expand the Chiropractic Benefit Worldwide Dynamic Chiropractic examines House Resolutions 5122 and 5202, two important pieces of legislation that would significantly impact the provision of chiropractic services to U.S. military personnel and veterans around the world. Providing chiropractic benefits to the nations veterans has been a goal of the chiropractic profession for decades. B.J. Palmer first promulgated the idea of making chiropractic a health benefit for veterans as early as 1937, and even succeeded in having a bill introduced in Congress that would have given veterans access to chiropractic services. While Dr. Palmers original efforts were unsuccessful, the profession finally reached its goal in January 2002, when President George W. Bush signed into law the Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Programs Enhancement Act, which established a permanent chiropractic benefit within the Veterans Affairs health care system.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS (PG) Legions of Ringers will be happy as Tolkeins fantasy novel and much- pilfered epic finally makes it to the small screen in this suprisingly faithful adaptation. Middle Earth is fabulously realised by the director Peter Jackson; shot in New Zealand, the Shires, home to the Hobbits, looks like the Home Counties crossed with Wales. An embarrassment of famous names and faces populate Tolkeins world, but the particularly hirsute Christopher Lee and Ian McKellen - as the wizards Saruman and Gandalf - steal the film from beneath the far- too-cutesy feet of the enthusiastic Elijah Wood (pictured left), who plays Frodo. Still, at least the video format helps offset the longueurs of the big-screen version - fast-forward through the unremitting journey- fight-rest pattern of the film and it will seem far pacier than when you sat through it in the cinema.

A trip in a stretched limousine has rew- arded Fartown High School pupils. Six students were given the special trip for having a 100% attendance record in the school year and for improving behaviour. The students were driven from school to Scammonden Water, where they enjoyed games and a picnic. The initiative was org- anised by teacher Joanne Carter and project worker Sarah Clarke.
PLEASANTON — From the moment Bill Wheeler told his friends and family that he was serious about getting into the limousine business, few took him for his word. Wheeler was the last person they could picture going into a business that revolved around punctuality. “I had never been on time anywhere in my life,” Wheeler said. “What people didnt understand is that if I were paid to be on time, then thats an entirely different matter.”
Daimler-Benz yesterday decided not to let its German rivals leave it in the dust in super-luxury cars, approving plans to go ahead with production of a limousine to compete with Rolls-Royce. As Volkswagen and BMW reached a settlement on taking over Rolls brands, Daimlers management board gave the go-ahead for production of the Maybach, which it has previewed at auto shows for the past year. “With the positive decision for the production of the Mercedes- Benz Maybach, we are underscoring once more our claim to represent the absolute top in every market segment,” said Daimler chief executive Mr Jurgen Schrempp.

Banks results have been solid so far this year. However, banks total pre-tax profits as a share of average total assets declined somewhat compared with the same period last year (see Chart 3.2). Financial Statement Disclosures for Financially Troubled Enterprises Readers of financial statements of companies operating under chapter 11 generally recognize the financial statement disclosures required by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Statement of Position 90-7, “Financial Reporting by Entities in Reorganization Under the Bankruptcy Code” (SOP 90-7). As required by SOP 907, financial reporting during reorganization proceedings should distinguish transactions and events that are directly associated with the reorganization from those related to a debtors ongoing business operations. The distinction between the reorganization and the ongoing business is made on each of the debtors principal financial statements. On the balance sheet, the debtor separately classifies pre- and post-petition obligations, distinguishing those pre-petition obligations that are subject to compromise from those that are not. Reorganization- and restructuring-related income and expenses are separately presented on the statement of operations. Within the operating, investing and financing categories of the statement of cash flows, cash flows in each of those categories resulting from the reorganization process itself are separately presented.

Peter Scardino prostate book review

Cancer is not a single disease but rather a monster with many faces. Doctors and scientists have listed more than 200 varieties of cancer each having different degrees of mortality different means of prevention different hopes for a cure. Carcinomas hit mucous membranes or the skin sarcomas attack the tissues under the skin and leukemia strikes at the marrow–and these are just a few varieties of cancer. Cancers are all characterized by an uncontrolled proliferation of cells under pre-existing tissues producing abnormal growths. Yet popular attitudes toward cancer have been less bothered with medical distinctions than with providing a single characterization of the disease evoking a slow and painful process of decay that comes as a sort of punishment for the patient. “Cancerphobia” is as Susan Sontag and James T. Patterson have shown deeply rooted in American culture.
C ANCER The scope of the problem in the United States is large. Some 1.2 million people were diagnosed with potentially fatal cancer in the year 2000. Of these, 59 percent were expected to live for at least five years (in some, the cancer may be continuously present for more than five years) with or without evidence of cancer. People of all ages, from birth to advanced age, can manifest cancer, making it the second-leading cause of death in the United States. In children cancer is unusual, but it has consistently been the leading cause of death from disease. As mortality rates from cardiovascular disease decline, the proportion of cancer deaths increases. It is anticipated that the mortality rate from cancer will surpass that from heart disease by the year 2050. Direct and indirect financial costs of cancer in the United States for the year 2000 were $178 billion.Developing countries represented 80 percent of the worlds approximately 6 billion people in the year 2000. In these countries, cancer has grown from a minor public health issue in the early 1990s to a rapidly expanding problem by the beginning of the twenty-first century. The emergence of a middle class, with attendant changes in lifestyle, increased longevity and exposure to potential carcinogens, and expectations of improved medical delivery systems have fueled the growing impact of cancer in the third world. The financial resources and socio-medical infrastructure needed to diagnose and treat, much less screen and prevent these cancers, are lacking in the developing world.A controversial issue in the United States is whether there has been progress in the War on Cancer declared by Congress in 1971. Since then a large flow of tax dollars has been directed to basic and clinical research with the goal of eliminating cancer. Mortality rates from all forms of cancer have declined slightly from 1990 through 2000, but with large variations among different types of cancer. Optimistic explanations include significant improvements in treatment and prevention. More pessimistic analyses suggest that some of the more common cancers can be diagnosed earlier so that benchmark five-year mortality rates have diminished, but that the actual course of the disease is unaffected because treatments are not really more effective.
The study found that chick embryos exposed to alcohol had eight times the number of cancer cells than those exposed to saline. The alcohol-exposed embryos also developed larger, denser tumors.

Secure Paper Shredding

Many paper recyclers who enter the document destruction business are familiar with aspects of plant layout and matching production equipment (balers and screens) to anticipated volume. But the information destruction industry also brings new considerations, such as choosing the right mobile shredding truck for on-site customers and shredding equipment that provides optimal particle size. TRUCKING. Paper recyclers entering the secure shredding sector may have some familiarity with selecting equipment for on-site customer use if they have ever placed balers in warehouses or store rooms.
When choosing a shredder, think about the level of security you require, and then choose a crosscut shredder to yield tiny particles of waste or a less costly strip-cut model. Crosscut provides a higher security level than strip shreds, but because crosscut requires a more complicated cutting mechanism, it will cost more. If you want to shred CDs, diskettes, or other data-recording media, check model specifications for these materials. Some crosscut models in this range can handle CDs on a limited basis or not at all, but many heavy-duty strip shredders can. Also consider who will service the shredder and whether supplies such as oil and bags are readily available. Several safety and convenience
This merger leverages Austin Shreds contacts, clients, and resources, helping to round out the services that Balcones Resources offers and accelerating our growth exponentially, said Kerry Getter, Balcones Resources CEO. With our combined equipment and increased capacity, we will now be able to offer customers a faster, wider variety of document destruction services at a lower price. Indeed, Balcones Resources had only recently started a shred division in Austin, and, by merging with Austin Shred, will now have the capacity to handle tractor trailer loads of material, in excess of 1000 tons per month. Balcones will also inherit Austin Shreds 350 customers and benefit from Austin Shreds sustainable shredding expertise and customer service.

J. Edward Murphy Jr. PennWell Publishing Co., 1421 S. Sheridan Road/P.O. Box 1260, Tulsa, OK 74101. 1996. Indexed. 300 pages. $69.95 Mobile Dentistry is written for health care professionals contemplating developing a mobile or nontraditional dental practice. The author explains each aspect of the development and implementation of a nontraditional dental practice, starting with the physical components essential to delivery, such as selecting equipment. He covers staffing and business needs, and ends with techniques for overcoming barriers that may be met throughout the process. Addressed are the needs particular to treating patients in long-term-care, skilled nursing facilities (integrating dental treatment planning with multidisciplinary assessment), and mobile dental practices (marketing, infection control, and management of laboratory procedures), as well as a chapter on mobile missionary programs. The book specifically addresses the requirements of a dental practitioner, however, the needs of the dental hygiene practitioner can be easily extrapolated. Additionally, because the author includes learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter, it may be utilized as a text for students. Mobile Dentistry is very timely, addressing a portion of the population with significant oral health care needs. Many are unable to travel to the traditional dental office or reside in long-term health care facilities. Others live in areas where traditional dental care is not attainable. Access to care is a concern for both target populations. The reader is provided with step-by-step suggestions to ensure a successful transition from the traditional dental setting to the nontraditional setting where underserved populations can be treated.
At Aesthetic Dentistry by Design, you can get your teeth whitened, a cavity filled or a crown placed. The practice has embraced spa dentistry, a concept that first popped up in New York, Beverly Hills and other cosmopolitan centers and started making its way across the country in the past year or so.
Dentistry For Babies There are some areas of dentistry that constantly change, and there are other things you simple cannot tell people often enough. Dental care should begin during pregnancy. A healthy mother means a healthy child, and proper prenatal nutrition is just as essential to the formation of teeth as it is to the formation of muscles, bones and brain cells. Many obstetricians now recommend that their pregnant patients take vitamins with flouride added. It can be shown that children who had this added protection in the womb have fewer cavities (dental caries) than children who did not.

This week Im going to have my hair cut. Im dreading it. Not because of the cost. Or because, as usual, Ill end up looking like Diana Ross. But because the hairdresser will talk to me. Hairdressers are the most boring people in the world, capable of discoursing at length upon an infinite range of mind-numbingly dull subjects. Pets, politics, holidays, kitchen appliances - you name it, hairdressers have an enormous amount to say about it. And theyll do so whether you want to hear it or not. It starts as soon as you enter the salon. They clock you in the mirror, and begin analysing you. Phrases such as “Lovely weather!” might seem innocuous, but are actually a test. A response marks you out as easy prey. Silence indicates youll need some softening up. Once in the chair, the chatter starts in earnest. A favourite opening gambit is “Good heavens, sir, who cut your hair last time?” Youre forced to confess that you did, then youre subjected to a lecture on how haircutting is best left to the professionals. What you dont say is that you only cut your own hair because the professionals are so boring.

LIVERMORE — Cleanup crews from the Environmental Protection Agency contained a mercury spill Thursday that ended up in a carport and a gutter in a Livermore neighborhood. About 3 p.m. Wednesday, authorities received reports of metallic beads in the gutter in front of the 900 block of Olivina Avenue, said Glen Haendel of the Livermore Fire Department. Richard Martyn, an on-scene coordinator for the EPA, said that the thousands of beads were roughly the size of pinheads.

The results of that study, reported in Part I, showed that fabric performance was affected by the test methods used. For this study, the three test methods are modified so they can be used to measure the performance of fabrics based on different exposure conditions. The gutter method is modified to allow increased contact time between the pesticide formulation and the fabric. An additional volume is added to the pipette method to allow the test method to measure the performance of materials under high and low exposure levels. The atomizer method is modified to allow application of higher volumes and/or concentrations of the liquid pesticide. The results are used to determine the level of exposure(s) that the test methods represent while screening materials against liquid pesticides. Based on the results, the gutter method with a low angle of incline and rate of application as well as the pipette method with a higher volume are suitable for measuring performance for high exposure levels. The atomizer method and the pipette method with lower volume are more suitable for lower exposure levels.Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is used by the agricultural industry to enhance the health and safety of individuals who handle and spray pesticides. PPE recommendations on pesticide labels are typically based on factors such as the task, the toxicity of the formulation, and the engineering controls used to apply the pesticide. For example, the PPE requirements for mixing and loading pesticides are more stringent than those for applying field strength mixtures. The PPE requirements for spraying class I (most toxic) pesticides are more stringent than those for classes III and IV. In addition to the toxicity of the formulation, the level of exposure is taken into consideration. The PPE requirements are lower when engineering controls (such as spraying from an enclosed tractor cab) are used when applying pesticides.Three national/international standard methods (gutter, pipette, and atomizer) have been proposed and used to measure the performance of PPE materials against penetration of liquid pesticides. In an earlier study we conducted to compare these three laboratory test methods [6], our results showed that evaluations of fabric performance were affected by the test method used. This was due to the differences in the approach taken to develop the test methods. The gutter method, EN 368 [4], was developed to measure fabric performance against splashes or accidental liquid spillage of pure liquids. To simulate these conditions, 10 mL of the formulation was dispensed in 10-seconds at a 45° incline, and the gravimetric method was used to measure repellency and penetration. On the other hand, the atomizer method, BBA-3-3/2 German guideline [2], was designed to measure the performance of textile materials against atomized liquid pesticide. To simulate field conditions, an atomized liquid that represented spraying with a tractor-mounted boom sprayer was used to contaminate the fabric, and penetration through the materials was determined by measuring the active ingredient of the formulation. The pipette method was developed as an accelerated test method to measure the performance of textile materials against a known volume of liquid pesticides (concentrate and field strength). For that method, the active ingredient was also analyzed to determine the performance of materials against liquid pesticides.

hypnotherapy phobias

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is common, with each UK GP seeing an average of about eight patients every week. It is unpleasant for sufferers, negatively affects quality of life, and is expensive for health services. A large proportion of patients do not do well with conventional therapy, and many seek unconventional alternatives. One of these is a form of hypnotherapy known as gut-directed hypnotherapy. It is based on relaxation to try to normalise gut function. Because there are claims that it works, some purchasers are tempted to provide a service. A systematic review of trials [1] suggests a large degree of caution is warranted. Authors sought studies, of any design, in nine electronic databases, and even contacted authors for information about any further studies.
HypnotherapyHypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and therapeutic intervention . The therapist leads the patient to positive change while the patient is deeply relaxed in a state of heightened suggestibility called trance.

IT is hardly surprising there is a growing crisis in social housing with no new council homes having been built for two decades. Soaring property prices coupled with fewer homes available has led to local authorities being unable to meet demand. OAKLAND — Firefighters with Oakland Fire Station 23 pulled up to a home on Sunkist Drive and immediately made a checklist of what was wrong with the property around the dilapidated white house. Weeds on the land near the road were knee high, dry and brown. The red brick chimney on the roof did not have a spark arrestor. A pile of dead and rotting vegetation was laying against a wall and there was no address number in sight. Firefighters from every station in the hills are going from house to house this month inspecting property for fire safety. They want homeowners to maintain a “defensible” space around their homes, a 30- to 100-foot space clear from overgrown grasses, weeds and tree limbs. Fire consumes this sort of vegetation first, then spreads to larger trees and homes.
The Apartment Association of La Crosse Area Inc. has unanimously passed an alternative to the proposed rental inspection/ licensing ordinance. The proposal calls for the inspection of “owner-occupied dwellings” - which includes single-family homes - as well as rentals.”To me there is a difference between what someone does in their home that they own and what a landlord does in a property (where) he is taking money to provide a place that is clean and safe,” said La Crosse Common Council member Charles Clemence, committee chairman. “If you make your own wine at home, thats one thing. If you make it for sale, there are other rules. If youre doing something as a business, thats different than doing for yourself.”

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

The water was strewn with delicate petals of fragrant frangipani, and soft music played as I lay dreaming in my perfumed bath under a tropical, moonlit sky. I stepped out, draped provocatively in a tiny towel, and walked into the honeymoon suite, the great bed piled high with soft white cushions, the white sheets turned down invitingly, and looked around to find. no one. I was on honeymoon alone. Again. Honeymoons are my thing. I love them. Putting myself in the place of thousands of couples planning their dream honeymoon is a serious business and I take it seriously. But its not always that simple. Honeymooning alone is an art, which is not come by without practise - and there can be many a pitfall on the romantic trail. From the beginning, when I first started out as travel editor, later editor, of Brides, I thought it best to make my position clear. I didnt after all want people to think I was a woman on the prowl. So arriving in Mahe in the Seychelles I announced myself clearly as the lady from Brides. Odd looks followed until I discovered there had been a misunderstanding and they thought I was the lady from Bribes. Heaven knows what kind of story I could have got following that line, but the marriage sector called.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.
Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

internet business

E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet!
Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. One picture is really worth 1,000 words. Alf Nucifora is an Atlanta based marketing consultant. He may be contacted by e-mail zubicon
A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.

Take the broad bean. Once it was thought entirely unremarkable to produce broad beans. Most people didnt really like them, but that was because most people left on the bitter outer skin. Carefully and laboriously peeled, broad beans are really delicious and can be cooked in all kinds of ways. The only social problem with the broad bean, in those innocent days, was that the obvious effort which went into preparing it could be felt by the guest to be somewhat oppressive - a combination of showing off and bullying. Fortunately, though, most guests are more interested in themselves than in the labours of the cook, and so most people didnt mind. Then, suddenly, the broad bean became fashionable. Sadly, I had to abandon it and wait until the fashion passed, as indeed it did. But now, to my horror, I find it is in fashion once again. At least I assume it is, because we were recently given delicious broad beans on toast as a first course in the house of the most achingly fashionable couple I know. This time Im not going to give in; however chic it may be, Im going to carry on cooking broad beans, especially at this time of year. To me they mean early summer, just as much as Jersey potatoes and mint. They are not only delicious, with their bitter, subtle taste; they also look beautiful in their satisfactory roundness faintly reminiscent, I used to think as a schoolgirl, of the curving buttocks of the naked Greek athletes portrayed in my classical history textbooks. The intense green is beautiful too, especially if, like me, you use frozen beans. It cannot be denied that peeling broad beans, though easy, is very time-consuming. The busy cook cannot possibly do it. There are some Middle Eastern food shops or supermarkets which sell broad beans ready peeled and frozen. Otherwise it is a question of delegation. Children can be very useful: their small, clever fingers are ideally suited to the work. Unfortunately, though, children are a terrible health hazard in the kitchen. They have no interest in even the most elementary hygiene and one has no idea where those clever fingers have been; I always reject any offering of food cooked by children and handled by filthy childish hands. Still, under close supervision - children prone to worms should be avoided older children can be very useful. They should spread the frozen beans on a large flat tray to thaw, before starting.

Concrete BlockConcrete mortar was used by the Romans as early as 200 B.C. to bind shaped stones together in the construction of buildings. During the reign of the Roman emperor Caligula, in 37-41 A.D. , small blocks of precast concrete were used as a construction material in the region around present-day Naples, Italy. Much of the concrete technology developed by the Romans was lost after the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century. It was not until 1824 that the English stonemason Joseph Aspdin developed portland cement, which became one of the key components of modern concrete. The first hollow concrete block was designed in 1890 by Harmon S. Palmer in the United States. After 10 years of experimenting, Palmer patented the design in 1900. Palmers blocks were 8 in (20.3 cm) by 10 in (25.4 cm) by 30 in (76.2 cm), and they were so heavy they had to be lifted into place with a small crane. By 1905, an estimated 1,500 companies were manufacturing concrete blocks in the United States.
Run by The Concrete Centre in collaboration with The Building Centre Trust and delivered by leading designers, innovators and manufacturers, the Concrete Elegance lecture series provides graduate architects and engineers with an inspirational insight into a range of projects where off-site and cast in-place concrete have been used to achieve innovative and elegant design. The 2007 Concrete Elegance series continued to cover a range of issues and projects. The first lecture examined developments in sustainable concrete architecture. In particular, it focused on the reduction of both embodied and operational CO2, how to create carbon-neutral concrete and the design of single-skin self-finished external concrete walls. Lecture speakers included: Toby Lewis of Fielden Clegg Bradley Architects, who discussed the National Trust Heelis building in Swindon and the Persistence Works in Sheffield; Patrick Filipaj of Zurich-based Banz Choffat Filipaj Architekten, who examined the single-skin concrete construction of Peter Gartmanns Char House; and Ian Prichett of Lime Technology, who presented the use of hempcrete for Adnams Distribution Centre designed by architect Aukett Fitzroy Robinson.

In some cases, a stepparent will legally adopt his or her spouses children from a previous marriage. The biological father or mother must either be absent with no legal claim to custody, or must grant permission for the stepparent to adopt.

In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co-parent. Co-parent is also the name given to the partner in a homosexual relationship who shares the household and parenting responsibilities with a childs legal adoptive or biological parent.

The home which was owned by the family prior to a divorce or separation is referred to as the family home in many state laws. In court settlements of divorce and child custody issues, the sale of the family home may be prohibited as long as the minor children are still living there with the custodial parent. The sale of the home may be permitted (or required to pay the noncustodial parent his or her share of its value) if the custodial parent moves or remarries, or when the children leave home to establish their own residences.

The term extended family traditionally meant the biological relatives of a nuclear family; i.e., the parents, sisters, and brothers of both members of a married couple. It was sometimes used to refer to the people living in the household beyond the parents and children. As family relationships and configurations have become more complex due to divorce and remarriage, extended family has come to refer to all the biological, adoptive, step-, and half-relatives.

Government agencies and other statistics-gathering organizations use the term head of household to refer to the person who contributes more than half of the necessary support of the family members (other than the spouse); in common usage, the head of household is the person who provides primary financial support for the family.

In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co parent.

> Hooker Furniture of Martinsville, NC, announced it has signed a Letter of intent to purchase the assets of New York-based Opus Designs Furniture LLC, a specialist in youth bedroom furniture. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The acquisition would provide a solid foundation for Hooker to build a strong youth bedroom program at more moderate price points, with a more comprehensive product line and with superior sourcing arrangements compared to (Hookers) current SmartKids youth furniture Line, said Paul Toms Jr., chairman, chief executive and president of Hooker.
MFI YESTERDAY blamed a dire end to its key winter sale for plunging like-for-like sales at its core UK retail business. The furniture group, which just three weeks ago guided the market to expect sales to recover, said its “outdated” bedroom ranges had put customers off buying its products. Its shares plunged 3 per cent to 140p. Like-for-like sales across its UK estate fell by 4 per cent from Boxing Day to 21 March, exacerbating the 3 per cent decline that the group reported last month. David Jeary, at Credit Suisse First Boston, said same-store sales must have fallen by 6 to 7 per cent in March, against the managements hopes that they would be flat against the previous year.

The Graphic Design Business Book
Graphic Designing Todays retail environment requires the package to do much more than just store its contents; the package must sell itself. While the package engineer must ensure that a box is functional as a container, the graphic designer is responsible for making the box function as a sales tool. Colors, images and text must be chosen with the potential end consumer constantly in mind. Using desktop computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-assisted manufacturing (CAM) software, the graphic designer creates a prototype of the package. CAD/CAM systems allow the designer to provide a precise representation of what the customer wants while also meeting manufacturing standards. This eliminates the lengthy processes of photography, film stripping and proofing that are part of the expensive procedure of getting an image ready for printing. The designer has combined computerized and digital techniques to prepare images and finish packaging projects, all in one fell swoop.
